In this collection of lyric essay, hastain explores the experience of the embodied extreme:
As forms capable of riding our feeling, we are embodied extremes to someone else’s (or
an era’s) societal status or states. Perhaps, then, it is sometimes the case
that our best choice is to embody our accuracies as reason and way to
reach further into extremity. We seek
beyond attributed or inherited basis and while we leave it behind us we
understand the base’s limit. From that understanding we extend, sculpt. Flowers
bloom brightly through basis and they break its limit as they do. Bacteria-rich
hydrothermal waters spill forcefully upward through surface from below it,
coloring and enriching perspective.
Hermaphroditic terrestrial slugs are born with the organs of
both sexes. By their nature they are extremes in that they differ from other
slugs; they switch and change. Hermaphroditic slugs elaborate on where one
another’s physiologies and pheromones overlap and as they do so they bring one
another’s genders into the forefront of interaction. Courtship is for this.
